Vembanad Bioblitz is a campus biodiversity register preparation project for the schools of Vembanad – Kuttanad region which is considerably rich in terms of wetland biodiversity. The project is jointly organized by the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and the India Biodiversity Portal (IBP). The program is funded and supported by The Wipro Foundation. Bioblitz primarily aims at providing school children a platform to identify, document and monitor the local biodiversity. The collected data during each Bioblitz are showcased in IBP website under the assistance of ATREE officials under respective school tags. This outreach would provide students as well as the schools to advance in building global biodiversity databases. The project targets 35 schools in the Vembanad -Kuttanad region. These schools are all part of “Jalapaadom” program run by ATREE CERC. Out of these 35 schools, Bioblitz is carried out with intense supervision in 8 volunteering schools which are government aided and where education is free and children are from economically backward groups. The project focuses on six months field observation from Sep-2014 to Feb-2015. Together by compiling the observation from all the participating schools a consolidated biodiversity register/ inventory would be prepared as an end note. The official inauguration of Bioblitz was held on 18th August 2014 at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Karappuzha, Kottayam by Shri. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan; Hon. Minister of Forest and Transport, Govt. of Kerala. The project is in full swing and the students are actively participating in the Bioblitz.
